Frequently Asked Questions
How Does Airbrush Tanning work?
The active ingredient in all spray tan solution is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a colorless sugar that darkens the skin through staining. DHA reacts with the amino acids (keratin proteins) in the outermost layer of your skin. As these dead skin cells naturally wear off, the color gradually fades, just like a genuine sun tan.
Our formula also includes a bronzer – a temporary coloring agent – which allows us to immediately see an approximation of the skin tone you will have once the tanning agent (DHA) takes effect. The bronzer is meant to wash off, leaving behind a deep, bronze skin tone. When you first shower, you will notice the bronzer rinsing off. This is normal!
How Long Does The Airbrushing Process Take?
It only takes approximately 20 total minutes to achieve the golden bronze of your dreams. This includes a brief skin consultation, prep time, custom spray application, and also dry time.
How Long Does The Tan Last?
Your airbrush tan will last between five and twelve days, and it really depends on how you prep and care for your skin. (Please see our ‘prep sheet”) Exfoliating before your tan, as well as moisturizing and caring for your skin after the tan, can help lengthen the life of your custom airbrush tan. Long hot baths or showers, prolonged exposure to chlorine, and waxing or shaving, will speed up the exfoliation process and shorten the life of your tan.
How Do I Prepare For My Airbrush Tanning Session?
Please refer to the Prep Sheet for more information.
What Do I Wear For My Airbrush Tanning Session?
If you are a woman, you may wear lingerie, a bathing suit or opt for no tan lines at all. If you are a man, we require that you wear something such as a bathing suit, underwear or Speedo.
How Safe Is Airbrush Tanning?
The active ingredient, DHA (dihydroxyacetone), was approved by the FDA in 1973. DHA is derived from raw sugar cane and is the only active ingredient approved by the FDA for sunless tanning products. DHA has been used safely over the years in numerous sunless tanning products, such as creams and lotions.

What Is The Difference Between Airbrush Tanning And The Spray Booths?
There is no comparison to a custom airbrush tan from South Bay Spray Tan. The key word is CUSTOM. Spray booths indiscriminately spray everywhere, without regard to areas needing a lighter or special consideration, resulting in inconsistent tans, often splotchy, streaky, and often with the orange tint associated with the self tanning creams. Our machine is also equipped with a drying mechanism so there’s no more going home sticky and wet from the universal booth that only does 2 ‘dry passes’. Booths also utilize an alcohol based solution that is drying to the skin. SBST knows that all skin is created equal, but every skin tone is different. We take the time to find the perfect blend of solution that will help you achieve the color you are looking for, not a machine that sprays everyone with the exact same color.
